Real Time, Non-Invasive Measurements of Vocal Tract Resonances: Application to Speech Training
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study reports the detenninationin real time of the frequenciesofthefirsttworesonancesofthe human vocal tract from measurementsof the acousticimpedancespectrumof the tract in parallel with the external field. The measurementswere made using a broad band, frequency-independent acoustic current source, a microphone and a spectrum analyserwhich displaysthe acoustic impedancespectrum. The display provided real-time, visual feedback whereby subjects learned to imitate target vowel sounds without hearing them. Inexperiencedsubjects who used this feedbackproducedsounds that wereapproximatelyas well recognisedas those produced by the same subjects imitatingtargetvowelsoundsafter listeningto them. The recognitionrate improveswith the subjects' experiencein usingthe impedancefeedbacktechnique. This non-invasivetechnique could thus have possible applicationsin speechtrainingandlanguage teaching.

A novel instrument to measure acoustic resonances of the vocal tract during phonation
Acoustic resonances of the vocal tract give rise to formants (broad bands of acoustic power) in the speech signal when the vocal tract is excited by a periodic signal from the vocal folds. This paper reports a novel instrument which uses a real-time, non-invasive technique to measure these resonances accurately during phonation. A broadband acoustic current source is located just outside the mo...
متن کاملOn instantaneous vocal tract length estimation from formant frequencies
The length of the vocal tract and its relationship with formant frequencies is examined at fine temporal scales with the goal of providing accurate estimates of vocal tract length from acoustics on a spectrum-by-spectrum basis despite unknown articulatory information. Accurate vocal tract length estimation is motivated by applications to speaker normalization and biometrics. Analyses presented ...
متن کاملComparison of LPC analysis and impedance vocal tract measurements
The acoustic measurement of the resonances in the space between vocal folds and lips, the vocal tract, allows a non-invasive, objective analysis of the spectral energy distribution for different articulatory cases. Whereas a conventional LPC analysis is successful only when applied to more or less stationary voice signals, an external excitation with subsequent measurement of the vocal tract im...
متن کاملTracking vocal tract resonances using an analytical nonlinear predictor and a target-guided temporal constraint
A technique for high-accuracy tracking of formants or vocal tract resonances is presented in this paper using a novel nonlinear predictor and using a target-directed temporal constraint. The nonlinear predictor is constructed from a parameter-free, discrete mapping function from the formant (frequencies and bandwidths) space to the LPC-cepstral space, with trainable residuals. We examine in thi...
متن کاملThe role of vocal tract resonances in singing and in playing wind instruments
The different vowel sounds in normal speech are produced by adjusting the position of tongue, lips and teeth so that the vocal tract resonates at certain specific frequencies. In voiced speech, these resonances interact with the harmonics of the lower frequency signal from the vibrating vocal folds to produce associated peaks, or formants, in the output spectrum. Singers sometimes use these res...
